Former referee Leonid Weisfeld has weighed in on officiating expectations ahead of the Gagarin Cup Final between Lokomotiv and Ak Bars.
“I’m hopeful we’ll see minimal refereeing influence in this series. People make mistakes, but look at the Lokomotiv–Avangard semifinal—any errors went both ways. You can’t accuse the referees of bias. Everyone, led by Alexei Anisimov, wants to reduce errors, but no one can claim mistakes impacted the final result in any series,” Weisfeld said.
When asked who he’d be rooting for, Weisfeld replied, “I haven’t cheered for a team in 40 years. I only support individuals, not clubs.”
