Coquito’ Rodríguez, Father of Álvaro, Passes Away; Forward Learns the News En Route to Seville

Daniel ‘Coquito’ Rodríguez, the former Uruguayan footballer and father of Elche striker Álvaro Rodríguez, has died at the age of 60. The news was announced on Monday by Club Atlético Peñarol, the club where he built much of his career.

‘Coquito’ Rodríguez played for Peñarol in three separate spells: from 1981 to 1987, 1988 to 1989, and 1990 to 1991. Born in Montevideo in December 1965, he made his debut for the aurinegro in a friendly against Defensor de Maldonado, and his official debut came on May 2, 1981, in a 2-1 victory over Fénix in the Uruguayan Championship. In total, he played 174 official matches, winning 91 and scoring 45 goals.

His trophy cabinet includes two Copa Libertadores titles (1982 and 1987) and three Uruguayan Championships (1981, 1982, and 1986). His final appearance for Peñarol was on June 16, 1991, in a 0-0 draw against Cerro, under coach Ricardo Ortiz.

Álvaro Daniel Rodríguez was born in Palamós, Spain, and has spent his entire career in the country. After a stint with Real Madrid Castilla, he broke into the first team, then moved to Getafe and later to Elche, where he currently plays. Over the weekend, he had scored before traveling with the team to Seville.

In 2023, Álvaro, nicknamed ‘el Toro’, was called up by Uruguay’s U20 squad for the South American Championship, scoring five goals. However, he was not released to play in the subsequent U20 World Cup, which Uruguay won by beating Italy 1-0 in the final in La Plata, Argentina.
