Barcelona have a golden chance to seal the LaLiga title in dramatic fashion this weekend, as they face Real Madrid in El Clásico at the Camp Nou on Sunday. Hansi Flick’s side need only avoid defeat to clinch back-to-back league championships for the first time since 2019, celebrating in front of their home fans. While many players have contributed to Barcelona’s impressive campaign, one midfielder has emerged as the standout performer.
While not the club’s most marketable star, Fermín López has seen his market value skyrocket by €50 million this season, doubling to €100 million. That increase is the largest in LaLiga, outpacing even Real Madrid’s Arda Güler, who rose by €45m. The young La Masia graduate has taken on a more central role in the starting XI this term, cementing his place as a key figure under Flick. To understand his meteoric rise, we spoke with LaLiga expert Iván Fuente on the Market Values podcast.
“He’s incredibly talented, but he’s the kind of player every team wants—skilled, yes, but also a tireless worker,” Fuente said. “He runs constantly, never gives up.” According to Opta, López leads Flick’s squad in tackles won per 90 minutes, while also contributing 13 goals and 17 assists across all competitions this season. Not only has he added a new dimension to Barcelona’s attack, but he has also filled the void left by the injured Gavi, who missed most of the season with a severe ACL injury.
Fuente agreed that López has been crucial in replacing Gavi. “He has the soul of a warrior—always pushing, always running, annoying opponents and the player on the ball. He’s very similar to Gavi.” However, López is not merely a temporary solution. From his early days at La Masia, he had his sights set on the first team. “After his time at La Masia, he moved to Linares, a club in Spain’s fourth tier,” Fuente added. “Even then, he was hardworking and focused. A teammate from that time said López already knew he would one day play for Barcelona’s first team.”
At just 19, after signing his first professional contract with Barcelona, López scored 12 goals and provided four assists in 37 matches for the lower-league side—a clear sign of what was to come. Now, to the delight of Barcelona fans, he has fulfilled his ambition of becoming a star for his boyhood club while helping them edge closer to another league title. The only question remains: can he deliver the decisive goal or assist against Real Madrid on Sunday to secure the championship?
